Temperature Moderation
The ability to affect the temperature of the turf environment can come from moderate sources such as the temperature difference between the root zone and ambient air or deeper underground. Subsurface aeration systems and surface fans can take advantage of these sources to reduce heat stress on turf.
Subsoil heating systems used under sportsfields are employed in colder climates to avoid frost and the risk of game cancellations. Such systems can also be used to keep warm weather turf from doing dormant during cool seasons and so avoid the need to overseed.
One commonly used system (hydronic heating) employs plastic tubing that circulates hot water under the turf. A new, more efficient and cost effective method of heating is the use of conductive polymer heating pads. Low voltage is applied to a network of pads that uniformly radiate heat upwards. Heat transfer can be further enhanced by the addition of subsurface pressure aeration.
